Stephen H. MangelsenBen Lomond, CA CFO27 Years of Experience Direct Contact: smangelsen@ ![]() |
Steve has over 25 years of senior executive and financial management experience as a CFO. He began his career as a senior accountant and CPA for one of the "Big 4" accounting firms, specializing in international and special and unusual audits. He has worked in the Silicon Valley and the Monterey Bay area his entire career. His experience encompasses all aspects of operational and financial management in hi-tech process control equipment and instrumentation manufacturing and distribution; in education and non-profits; and in general and retail building materials.
Steve has an impressive track record of delivering solid results. His strategic planning methods, internal and external process controls and policies, and cash management strategies transformed a struggling $3 million manufacturing company into a $70 million world leader in non-contact temperature measurement equipment. He traveled extensively expanding the business globally; and he devised the strategy, handled the stock transactions, and implemented a 7-year employee buyout, completing the agreement in just over half that time. In addition, as CFO and Treasurer of the Board of Directors for a world-renowned educational institution, Steve was able to prevent bankruptcy by renegotiating complex debt restructure agreements with multiple parties and banking institutions and by meticulously managing cash, disbursements, and debt. At a California Community College, he completed a forensic analysis of finance and developed a 5-year strategic plan for them in just a few short months enabling them to trim expenses by over $1 million and better weather extensive budget cuts. At a regional multi-site building materials company, he put controls in place to better monitor inventory, and he achieved a cash flow positive position and brought them into compliance with all bank covenants during the housing crisis.
Steve possesses superior analytical and problem-solving abilities allowing him to quickly isolate problems and find the best solutions to increase efficiency and maximize profitability. He is particularly adept at cash and debt management and complex financial issues and negotiations. He is an expert at turning around distressed companies and organizations.
Steve believes "Cash is King," meaning cash flow management is the most important aspect of any business. His cash flow model manages cash; forecasts needs; and insures compliance with bank covenants. He believes that CFO's are a highly specialized breed of financial brainpower and that most small to mid-size companies do not need a full-time expert on their payroll.
He is an avid reader of literature, philosophy, and history. He enjoys traveling and spending time with his wife of 25 years, his 19-year-old daughter, and friends.
