Gene has a passion for small and medium sized privately held businesses. Having extensive CFO and commercial lending experience with companies in this category, he understands the demands and challenges faced by the owners and managers of these organizations. Prior to joining B2B CFO, Gene co-founded and served nine years as the CFO of a national IT service provider that supported both commercial and government clients. With his ability to engineer infrastructure, manage risk and profits, and effectively finance this level of activity, he helped guide a business that doubled in revenues annually in each of its first five years. His oversight experience in federal government contracting, relative to FAR, CAS, DCAA, SBA, Facility Clearances, and procurement of key contract ordering vehicles such as the GSA Schedule, allowed for business expansion into this lucrative area. Gene has also managed tough situations as a CFO, with a firm significantly exposed to Dot.Com era clients. His "turnaround ability" led the firm through multiple client bankruptcies, significant infrastructure reduction, and multiple refinancings, allowing the firm to survive and then prosper. In two CFO ventures, Gene's core strengths in strategic planning, budgeting, internal controls, credit/collection, expense reduction, cash management and bank management greatly benefited the firm's owners and their opportunity to ultimately sell to public firms. He was responsible for successfully leading the M&A target team in three successful sales, two as CFO, one as a consultant. Gene understands that the process of owners "cashing-out" begins long before a firm goes to market, beginning with the creation and maintenance of transparent, accurate, transferable, well-integrated and cost effective accounting, work process, and reporting systems. These systems have to be the product of a joint collaboration of senior departmental leaders. They also have to properly access performance, profitability and risk at the unit, division, and overall levels. Gene's ability to bring these leaders together, to create outstanding systems, is one of his strong-suits. As a long time resident of the Metro-DC area, Gene supports these efforts with a strong regional network of professional contacts in government, banking, accounting, legal, insurance, and human resources.
Prior to working as a CFO, Gene spent three years managing the finance subsidiary of a mid-cap public firm, on a profit center basis. This stint allowed daily interaction and consulting with senior executives at this public firm. In this venture, Gene's firm was tasked with offering an asset based lending facility, in tandem with an outsourced back office accounting platform to small, privately-held affiliated staffing firms. This banking effort allowed Gene to mentor affiliated owners with best practice basics in areas like financial reporting and analysis, budgeting, cash forecasting, cost reduction, credit /collection, and business development. Prior to work with the aforementioned, Gene managed distressed Hotel properties for six years, with a particular emphasis on hotel refinancing, refranchising, and reconstruction. His ability to work with community regulators, vendors, and bankers in these "turnaround" environments allowed for significant market value appreciation at four of the six properties managed by Gene.
Gene's passion for small and mid-sized businesses evolved from his five years as a commercial banker at two regional banks in the Southeast US. After graduating from the University of Tennessee MBA program, Gene was assigned to a nationally renowned, asset-based lending group. His work with clients seeking A/R and inventory lines of credit for working capital growth, allowed him to learn the nuances of accurately assessing line needs based on revenue and profit growth, combined with current asset turn-rates and collateral coverage. His asset-based work in the leveraged buyout arena gave him special insight relative to effective business combination and asset liquidation. His work with various types of fixed asset funding, from term to lease financing, allowed for insight into transaction tax and cash flow benefits. Gene uses this early career experience in his current interactions with lenders to optimize the full bank relationship, relative to loan type and amount, guarantor risk, collateral coverage, workable covenants, cash management, and competitive renewal ability.
Gene has devoted significant time over his career to his community. His current volunteer efforts include various positions with Habitat For Humanity, Loudoun Interfaith Foodbank, Enterprise Development Group, and Loudoun County Board of Elections. Gene's battle-tested skill set, entrepreneurial understanding, and commitment to business integrity, make for an ideal partner for entrepreneurs personally focused on growing profits and value.
