Mike Sluka combines 20 years of hands-on CFO experience with 25 years of financial consulting skills. As a partner in a Big 4 CPA firm, Mike led financial audit and advisory services to clients in manufacturing, transportation, food processing/distribution, real estate/hospitality and insurance/healthcare throughout the United States. During that period, Mike led the KPMG's development and roll-out of an Enterprise Risk Management model to an industry market. Mike was also hands-on in the initial adoption of Sarbanes-Oxley level of internal controls for publicly-held client companies. Those experiences provided Mike with the skill set to help clients reduce their business risks, avoid surprises and achieve profitability goals.
Mike subsequently transitioned to the role of CFO for the restructuring division of a Fortune 500 enterprise with operations in both the U.S. and Europe. During phase one, Mike led the financial aspects of identifying, consolidating, restructuring non-core businesses and product lines. In phase two, Mike led the financial aspects of sale or divestiture of some of the businesses, while subsequently leading the sale of the remainder to a financial turnaround organization. Mike joined the acquiring organization as a business segment CFO and led the segment through the acquisition and assimilation of other target enterprises. This experience provided Mike with knowledge and expertise in obtaining financing through commercial lending or investment banking, acquisition target due diligence and business valuation methodology. Mike oversaw the development of multi-year business models and ROI calculations to serve as target evaluation decision tools.
Mike relocated to South Florida where he was subsequently recruited to function as CFO for a closely-held insurance and healthcare start-up enterprise. In this role, Mike worked with the CEO-owner to identify and evaluate barriers to market-entry, competitive landscape, customer needs, product and service differentiation and future sources of capital. Mike developed pricing models for different product and service offerings to help the CEO-owner identify either under-served or higher margin opportunities. Over the course of time, Mike worked with investment bankers to further identify products and services within the enterprise most likely to successfully attract external capital. Ultimately, Mike worked through a business-segmenting exercise leading to the initial public offering of a portion of this closely-held business.
Mike remained with the privately-owned business segment as President/CEO for a time, turning his attention to client-facing and development responsibilities as well as introducing concepts of cost efficiency and business risk management to the internal operations functions such as HR, IT and Legal.
