Lyle is a Chief Financial Officer with over 30 years of experience, principally as a CFO but also as a CEO, COO and Board member. He works with business owners to develop successful business strategies, manage financial and operational challenges, and improve communication with stakeholders. Lyle began his career with Pricewaterhouse Coopers, became a CPA, and went on to obtain a master's in business from Northwestern University; subsequently he assumed senior management roles in several businesses. His experience includes manufacturing and services, life science and medical devices; high growth businesses and challenging turnaround situations; with businesses financed through private equity, venture capital as well as through public and other private investors.

For a few years just prior to joining B2B CFO, Lyle worked in start-ups in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Just prior to that experience he was a CFO and later a CEO in two businesses, a manufacturer of engineered materials and a clinical research company, both with sales of approximately $200,000. He worked as a CFO for two high growth software businesses, one in mapping, the other in mobile communications. The foundation of Lyle's training and development took place at Fortune 500 multinational manufacturing companies focused on growth, quality and serving customers while working in both operating and corporate positions.

At the outset of working with a business leader, Lyle focuses on understanding his client's goals and needs, the company's strategy, and performance. He believes strongly that listening carefully distinguishes those who can provide superior service. His approach is "hands on" focusing on the needs of the company and its ownership. With his deep and diverse experience, he will hit the ground running.

On overview of Lyle's uses his skills and abilities to contribute to business success includes:

  • Since coming to the Raleigh area fifteen years ago, he has been responsible for completing the sale of five businesses. Throughout his business career, Lyle has managed over 25 M&A transactions including valuation, due diligence, negotiation and post transaction follow up. Several have been completed both using no outside resources while many involved brokers and investment bankers. Several have involved international businesses.
  • As a CFO working as the right hand of the CEO, Lyle has developed many strategic plans for several businesses. These plans focused on growth, improvements of profitability and cash flow, and identified supporting tactical initiatives and key performance indicators, establishing accountability and enabling performance management. To be meaningful, plans must have a path to achievement and building that pathway is critical to success.
  • Lyle has developed profit improvement plans for businesses in manufacturing, service and software businesses and worked with teams to successfully implement them. This includes initiatives for businesses in engineered products, clinical research, telecommunications software and electronics.
  • Working with highly leveraged businesses, Lyle has negotiated with lending institutions to obtain and refinance debt, negotiate covenants and monitor compliance. He believes that establishing close working relationships with lenders is important to the success of these partnerships.
  • Lyle has led several ERP implementations and other systems such as distribution management and engineering (SAP, PeopleSoft/Oracle, Great Plains/Microsoft and others). These initiatives were often used as a vehicle for organizational and process change, adopting best practices, reducing waste and improving profitability.
  • Lyle has international experience having worked with businesses throughout Europe, Asia, South America and Africa.

His expertise as a CFO across many industries as well as deep experience in strategy, operations, and the many facets of financial management enables him to make successful contributions to business owners that desire support and advice.

Lyle moved to the Raleigh area in 2005 from the Chicago area bringing with him exceptional experience and expertise. Outside of his work, he is involved in several volunteer activities including the Venture Mentoring Service of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development, providing support and guidance to early stage, entrepreneur driven businesses; he serves on the governance committee of the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute, the Patient and Family Board for the UNC Hospital's rehabilitation department; as a member of the STAR Clinical Research Network, a research consortium including UNC, Duke, and Vanderbilt Hospitals, the Mayo Clinic and others. His three children are spread around the country and are all deeply involved in very interesting businesses in consulting, engineering and investments.
