He graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and holds an MBA from Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He has guided improved financial visibility, controls, strategic planning, cash flows, and cost reductions while supporting M&A activities and ERP integrations.
He has directed financial operations of up to 25 people with the focus on instilling an “advisory culture” in his team to support the business. He has honed his skills in multi-site, cross-border environments, complex manufacturing, CPG sales & marketing, logistics, and e-commerce.

While the role of the CFO is one of financial process ownership, a CFO will add the most value to an organization as a strategic partner and advisor to the CEO. CFO services must add this value by assisting in the clarification of the business model and how businesses actually work within their given industries. By assisting CEOs, entrepreneurial owners, and staff, scalable processes can be properly designed or improved upon to deliver desired results. Successful CFO services include an agreement with the senior management team regarding the appropriate measures of a CFO's success. The work of the CFO must be grounded in integrity, and be transparent in the ability to instill an "advisory culture” within the organization at all levels.
Mark's career began in the audit department of a Fortune 100 multi-national company where he learned the importance of internal controls. Controls secure assets and maintain the integrity of accounting and reporting systems and they provide operational efficiencies.
While serving as Regional Finance Director of one of the world’s most iconic CPG companies, Mark was exposed to the intricacies of complex accounting, including general ledger, liability management, transfer pricing, corporate consolidations, and taxation.
Accounting Cycle Management
As a CFO, Mark developed a deep appreciation of the interrelationships within accounting cycles such as revenues and accounts receivable, marketing and promotional waterfalls, general expenses and accounts payable, and inventory measurement and company valuation. Mark has significant experience in working with independent accountants and auditors.
As CFO, Mark understands the importance of cash availability reporting and cash flow forecasting, maximization of available cash balances, growth financing, stand-by financing, and intercompany accounts management.
Capitalization and Financing
As CFO, Mark's experience includes bank debt financing and re-financing (such as venture debt, secured loans, and lines of credit), raising capital through a private placement, and new equity capitalization via the sale of founders’ shares and issuance of new common stock.
Risk Management and Contingency Planning
As a CFO Mark gained a deep understanding of the importance of organizational risk management including (but not limited to) asset safeguarding, business diversification, insurance reviews, regulatory compliance, identifying and managing complex and high risk processes, currency hedging, and contingency planning.
Mark's experience includes developing "dashboards" and metrics through the gathering of statistical data and volume metrics. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) can reveal opportunities to improve overall performance, top line growth, bottom line growth, expense management, liability management, and identifying risk areas. These indicators also provide a ready source of benchmarking within a multi-location organization and against the industry and competitors.
Employee Training and Mentoring
Finance departments have a unique position to see the business from all angles; this visibility allows for an advisory culture to be instilled in the team. An advisory culture means that everyone in the department is working across the organization, being a sounding board for creative ideas and solutions and is pro-actively signaling challenges that may arise. In order to provide more strategic direction, employees need to be coached in strong communication skills allowing them to ask questions, work with other teams, collaborate with leaders, and present their analyses to key stakeholders in a way they can easily understand and act on.
Project and Process Management
Mark’s years of experience have proven that the CFO is often the best candidate to help manage or co-manage critical projects and processes. Whether financial or operational in nature, the CFO should be involved to alleviate the burden on other executive managers.
